Little Silver native Chris Gotterup has emerged as one of the PGA Tour's young stars.
After a run of great play overseas, Chris Gotterup returned to the U.S. and continued his hot streak with a strong finish at the PGA Tour’s 3M Open in Blaine, Minnesota over the weekend.
The former Rutgers star, who opened with an 8-under-par 63, finished at 18-under-par to finish tied for 10th, his third top-10 finish in as many weeks.
Gotterup, the CBA graduate and former Shore Conference champion, is now up to No. 20 in the FedEx Cup points standings, with the Fed Ex Cup playoffs getting underway in two weeks, culminating with the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta on Aug. 21-24.
“I’d like to get to East Lake and then see what happens from there,” Gotterup said in a press conference last week. “I feel like I'm playing with house money at the moment ... I'm excited for the rest of the season.”
Over the past three weeks, the Little Silver native has a win at the Scottish Open, outplaying Rory McIlroy head-to-head on Sunday to introduce himself to the world, backing that up by finishing third at the British Open a week later.
His recent form has put him in the conversation for the U.S. Ryder Cup squad, with the Ryder Cup to be contested at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York in September.
Young star rising
There were clearly signs Gotterup, who won during his rookie season in 2024, was growing as a Tour player, with nine finishes in the top 28 in 11 tournaments heading into the Scottish Open.
But the victory was his first top 10 finish of the season, and he was on the outside looking in for the FedEx Cup Playoffs, sitting beyond the top 70 at No. 78. He returned to the country No. 23, along with $2.6 million in winnings from the two events.
Now Gotterup has played five straight tournaments since skipping a week after finishing 23rd at the U.S. Open.
And he’ll make it six-in-a-row, having committed to play at next week’s Wyndham Championship, which begins Thursday at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.
He has a history in the event, having played there on a sponsor’s exemption in 2022 after his final college season at Oklahoma, finishing 54th, including a final round 67. After playing on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2023 and earning his PGA Tour card, he returned to Sedgefield last year and finished tied for 22nd at 10-under-par.
The 26-year-old enters Wyndham with $3.9 million earnings on the season, including $263,900 for his finish at the 3M Open.
