CHEBOYGAN — This was a standout year for many high school coaches in the Cheboygan area.
Just about everywhere you looked, at least one coach guided that team to success.
Now, it’s your time to cast your vote on who you think was the best coach in the Cheboygan area during the 2024-25 high school sports year. The poll opens on Monday and closes at 11 p.m. on Wednesday.
Here’s the nominees:
Jason Friday, Cheboygan Boys Basketball – Guided Cheboygan to its best season in recent memory, compiling a 15-9 record that included victories over Boyne City and Grayling.
Travis Meyer, Inland Lakes Football – Under Meyer, the Bulldogs captured a second consecutive MHSAA 8-player Division 1 regional title and won the Ski Valley for a fourth consecutive fall. Inland Lakes finished 11-1 overall, with its lone loss coming against Pickford in the state semifinals.
Elijah May, Mackinaw City Baseball – Helped guide the Comets to a 22-7 overall record and a runner-up finish in the Northern Lakes Conference at 10-2.
Lonny Metty, Onaway Softball – After a slow start to the campaign, Metty’s Cardinals got red hot, captured their first district title since 2019, and reached the regional final.
Josh Ferraiuolo, Burt Lake NMCA Girls Basketball – Leading one of the youngest teams in Northern Michigan, Ferraiuolo’s NMCA girls captured the program’s first-ever district title. The NMCA boys, like the girls, finished with a winning record.
