The Yankees finally found their third baseman, and one of New York’s stars got straight to rubbing salt in the wound of the team they snatched him from.
The Colorado Rockies are sending Ryan McMahon to the Bronx for two low-level prospects. McMahon is an instant upgrade, and trading two players who are years away from a chance at being in the majors is a small price to pay.
Carlos Rodón faced his new teammate while pitching for the San Francisco Giants, and he’s got a lot of faith about the move.
“I think we’re gonna get the best out of him when he shows up here,” said Rodón. Pretty typical talk when your team makes a trade.
“No offense to the Rockies organization, but they really don’t have a chance.”
Huh?
“I think when he shows up here, knowing that he’s gonna put on the pinstripes and what we’re trying to do, it’s gonna up his game.”
I mean, they literally beat you guys in a game this year. I’m not going to come out and say they should be World Series favorites, but I’d bet this quote made its way to the Rockies' locker room.
Those guys aren’t going to remember a lot about this year, but that will stick with them until the next time they step in the box against Rodón, no matter who they’re playing for.
This is a quote that some bosses would call him into the office over. There is no need to fire up a roster of professional athletes that, no matter how many times they lose, take a lot of pride in what they do.
Fans could be sitting at home next year watching the Yankees play any random team, say, the St. Louis Cardinals, and out of nowhere guys are jawing at each other and now a bench-clearing brawl made someone sprain an ankle, break a wrist or find some other way to ruin a playoff run.
Aaron Judge would not say this. Rodón ought to follow his lead.
