A proposed trade idea lands the Dolphins with two new cornerbacks.

The Miami Dolphins have had something of a shaky offseason that has matriculated into training camp. The team traded away star cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers early in July, and five-time All-Pro receiver Tyreek Hill has often been linked with a trade of his own.

The Ramsey trade, which landed the team Minkah Fitzpatrick, was a necessary evil, trading away a player who no longer wanted to be on the team and who, reportedly, had contributed to a toxic atmosphere. However, it was a deal that left an already cornerback-starved defense feeling even lighter heading into training camp.

That unit had another blow handed to them during the first few days of training camp, when Artie Burns, who had just joined the team in free agency, suffered a torn ACL and was subsequently ruled out for the 2025 season. The Dolphins need help.

According to Daniel Arwas of Heavy Sports, there might be a solution for the Dolphins, one that lands them two cornerbacks capable of starting in 2025 and beyond: the Arizona Cardinals’ Starling Thomas V and the Los Angeles Rams’ Cobie Durant.

“Thomas started 15 games in 2024, his second season in the league; whilst Durant started 14 in what was his third. Both received average-ish grades from Pro Football Focus, with Thomas getting 60.9 to Durant’s 63.7, ranking them as the 144th and 94th top qualifying corners in the league last year.” Arwas writes.

The trades, according to Arwas, would see the Dolphins send a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2026 seventh-round pick to the Cardinals for Thomas, and a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Rams for Durant.

“So even though neither Durant nor Thomas are particularly sexy names, they are more than capable of getting the job done and keeping Miami’s secondary afloat for the following season, until they are able to make some changes next offseason.” Arwas adds.

Anything that resembles competent cornerback play is an upgrade for the Dolphins right now. The team’s current starters on the outside, Storm Duck and Cam Smith, have both shown flashes, but not nearly enough for the team to feel confident heading into 2025. Smith was a second-round pick in 2023 but played just six games in 2024.
