Yankees icon explains why managing doesn’t fit his life, even as he joins Team Italy’s WBC staff
Yankees legend Jorge Posada’s demeanor immediately shifted when the possibility of becoming a manager was presented to him.
In an interview on the YES Network on Tuesday, Michael Kay presented the idea to Posada.
“I don’t think I can do it, Michael,” Posada said with a hint of dread in his voice, via X/Twitter. “I love being at home and I love my time. Being in a clubhouse 24/7 again, it’s just going to be a lot for me. I’m never going to say never, but it’s a tough job.”
Posada is one of the best catchers in Yankees history. He spent his entire 17-season career with the club.
A key member of the “Core Four,” Posada helped lead the Yankees to four World Series championships (1998, 1999, 2000, and 2009). He was a five-time All-Star and a five-time Silver Slugger Award winner, finishing his career with a .273 batting average, 275 home runs, and 1,065 RBIs.
In 2015, the Yankees retired his No. 20 and dedicated a plaque to him in Monument Park.
For the upcoming 2026 World Baseball Classic, Posada will take on a new role as an assistant coach for Team Italy. He was recruited for the position by the team’s manager and his former Yankees teammate, Francisco Cervelli.
Team Italy will compete in Group B in Houston, Texas, facing off against the United States, Mexico, Great Britain, and Brazil starting in March 2026.
