Rio Ferdinand’s honest take on Casemiro says a lot about the Brazilian’s time at Manchester United
Casemiro continues to feature regularly for Manchester United, but Rio Ferdinand’s assessment of the midfielder highlights the growing concerns over his future at Old Trafford.
The 33-year-old is in the final six months of his contract, and there’s an expectation that he’ll move on when this campaign comes to a close.
His current deal does include an option to extend by another year, but only if he reaches 35 starts this season. With just 11 appearances so far, it seems increasingly unlikely he’ll hit that mark before the end of 2024/25.
This has opened the door for clubs outside England to start talks with him as early as January, allowing him to arrange a move well ahead of next summer’s window.
Rio Ferdinand’s reaction to Jamie Carragher’s comments on Casemiro
When Ruben Amorim took over at Old Trafford in 2024, Casemiro managed to work his way back into the Manchester United starting line-up.
His form also earned him a recall to the Brazil squad after Carlo Ancelotti, who had worked with him at Real Madrid, took charge of the national team last summer.
Reflecting on those comments during an episode of Rio Ferdinand Presents, he said: “Has football left Casemiro? Is it gone? I dunno, is it back?
“I always think this when you look at players in teams and they’re not doing well, it’s more than just that they’re not good enough.
“There are sometimes big reasons as to team structure and shape of the team, and maybe the relationship with the manager, that isn’t enabling them to perform.
“It isn’t just about a basic – he isn’t good enough, you’ve got to get rid of him – you’ve got to look into these things a bit more at times.”
What exactly did Jamie Carragher say about Man Utd midfielder Casemiro amid Rio Ferdinand’s remarks?
Carragher didn’t hold back when talking about Casemiro, offering a blunt take on the Brazilian’s future at the top level.
The Sky Sports pundit had famously suggested that football “might have left” Casemiro after the United star’s performance against Crystal Palace in 2024.
Speaking to Sky Sports at the time, as per Metro, he said: “I think Casemiro, deadly serious, should know himself tonight that he should only have another three games left at the top level.
“His agent or people around him need to tell him this has to stop because we are watching one of the greats of the modern time[s], Champions Leagues, playing for Brazil, playing for Real Madrid.
Casemiro has found his feet again under Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford and remains a regular feature in Manchester United’s lineup this season.
