Here's Texans DB Calen Bullock said following Saturday's practice, including his thoughts on C.J. Gardner-Johnson and the pick-sixes during practices.
Here is everything Houston Texans defensive back Calen Bullock said following Saturday's practice, including his thoughts on C.J. Gardner-Johnson and the pick-sixes during practices.
Question: On how much more comfortable is he going into his second year
Calen Bullock: “I think now, going into the second year, I’m more comfortable being a year into this system. It helps me go out there and play faster, and I know what to expect now that I'm out there.”
On if the defense’s three pick-sixes at practice are the standard
“I mean, of course. We try and go out there and get a takeaway every single game. If we get multiple, that's lovely. So yeah, that's the standard.”
Q: On what does the team get with DB C.J. Gardner-Johnson
Bullock: “Very versatile dude, very vocal player, a leader, a guy who's going to go out there and give us his all, and a guy who's going to push everybody around him and make everybody better around him.”
Q: On the offseason workouts with the DBs and how he tries to help other players at practice
Bullock: “It helps a lot. Us training with Jacory [Nichols], a great trainer. Him having us all out there at the same time, we are all putting the work together. So, we know what to expect when we get into camp, and we know what we're going to bring to the table.”
Q: On what lessons the team can take away from the past few practices before the pads go on
Bullock: “There's no lessons learned. We are here to compete in this camp. When the pads go on, we're going to keep competing. Everybody's out here. We're all trying to fight for a spot now. There's no more OTAs. After this, it's season. We're going, so.”
On his biggest area of growth heading into training camp
“Like I said, from year one to year two, just becoming a smarter player. Like I said, being a year into the system, it helps me play comfortably and go out there and play faster.”
Q: On what he thinks the secondary can be
Bullock: “The best, not one of the best. I think we've got the best secondary in the NFL. We've got guys everywhere. From depth, I think we've got the best depth. And every guy who names their card up, they're going to step up and make a play.”
Q: On what he’s seen from CB Jaylin Smith so far
Bullock: “A guy who's out here competing every single day. A guy who's learning every single day. A guy who's growing, competing, making plays every single day, and being consistent. So, he keeps that up, he's going to keep making plays.”
Q: On how he and CB Kamari Lassiter have been able to help CB Jaylin Smith
Bullock: “I think we get to help him a lot, especially me. Coming from college with him, I've seen his growth, and now we're here with each other. So, me being a year into the system, I can kind of help him, knowing the system. And when he asks me questions, I always have an answer for him. And we sit down and go over our plays every single night. We talk on the phone, even when we're in a hotel with each other. So that's my guy right there.”
Q: On what WR Christian Kirk provides for the offense
Kirk: “Very versatile dude. Guy, like I said, who's going to go out there and give us his all, who brings juice to the offense. Very dangerous slot receiver. He is a slot pro. That boy, he’s good in that slot. So, he’s got some really strong hands. But I think he's going to be really good for our team.”
Q: On recent cornerback rankings not having CB Derek Stingley Jr. at number one
Bullock: “Very disrespectful. ‘Sting’ [CB Derek Stingley Jr.] is the best corner in his league, hands down. So just to see the disrespect, it's kind of crazy. What he put into his game and what he comes out here and do every single day, I don't think there's not a DB better than him.”
