Liverpool open talks for £78m centre-back deal

There are big changes coming to the Liverpool backline in the coming transfer windows.

The Reds will first need to sort out the future of Ibrahima Konate - whose current deal expires at the end of the season. If no new deal is secured then the Frenchman will be leaving for nothing in summer 2026.

And it’s not like the Premier League champions are currently blessed with an abundance of other options. Virgil van Dijk is 34 - and his deal only extends a year beyond Konate’s.

In the same boat is Joe Gomez - who is out of contract in 2027 and widely expected to depart. So Arne Slot and Richard Hughes require centre-back options and could do with adding them pretty quickly.

Liverpool open talks for Van de Ven

The Anfield club have already missed a deal for Marc Guehi. And while the club have signed Mor Talla Ndiaye this January it will be a while before the Senegalese teenager is ready for the first team.

There are now indications that Liverpool are putting in the work to secure the signing of Micky van de Ven - the Dutchman at Tottenham who could one day succeed Van Dijk in the Reds’ backline.

Fichajes in Spain is claiming that talks have begun for the 24-year-old - who has been a bright spot in a very poor Tottenham season.

“Talks are still in the early stages, but the message is clear,” the report reads. “Liverpool are determined to go all out for their target and don't want the deal to drag on.”

Arne Slot a big fan of Van de Ven

Under contract until 2029 Van de Ven comes with a reputation as one of the best - and quickest centre-backs in the Premier League.

And as a naturally left-sided player there is no doubt that he would be well placed to eventually take Van Dijk’s place.

Arne Slot is known to be a huge admirer - with Van de Ven admitting that the Liverpool head coach TWICE tried to sign him earlier in his career.

But rather than hook up with Slot at either AZ or Feyenoord - Van de Ven moved to Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga before opting for Spurs in 2023.

The Londoners are going nowhere however and could do with cashing their chips on Van de Ven at the end of the current campaign.

Liverpool might have to pay up to £78m to secure his signing but they would be acquiring an international, Premier League-proven talent.
