Matthew Golden Reacts to His First Packers Training Camp

Matthew Golden got his first taste of the Green Bay Packers' training camp on Wednesday, after becoming the team's first-round draft pick. With the rookie receiver, Jordan Love now has another potential target on the field along with Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, and others, while Christian Watson recovers from injury. Watson's return from injury remains unclear, and although it could be earlier than anticipated, Golden will need to learn quickly at training camp so he can become a regular option for Love.

He already impressed Green Bay's front office after a standout season with the Texas Longhorns.

In his final season at Texas, Golden compiled 987 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in college on 58 receptions. His 61.7 yards per game average likely has Love, coaches, and fans excited about Golden joining the receiving group.

The rookie receiver spoke to reporters in the locker room following Wednesday's practice session and seemed excited about everything so far, but also staying focused.

Golden said he's getting acclimated to how the coaching staff wants him to play in their system and is trying to learn as quickly as possible to improve his game, according to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

"It's a blessing to be in this position, obviously," he said, adding, "At the end of the day, that's what I'm getting paid to do. That's my job to come out here and perform, compete, and do what I'm supposed to do."

Golden also called seeing the fans attending a team practice for the first time a "cool experience," admitting it made it feel like a game.

However, when it comes down to it, his goal is to compete and perform at or above his team's expectations.

"I'm just out here to play fast, man," he told reporters.

Golden already had one of training camp's early highlights. The rookie caught an eight-yard touchdown pass, but it was courtesy of backup quarterback Malik Willis, not Love.

Those Love-to-Golden touchdowns are likely to arrive, and many are hoping to see them arrive often during a deep Packers run into the playoffs.

Golden's accelerated learning during training camp should go a long way towards his and the Packers' success in what could be a challenging NFC North division this season.
