STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State’s sharp shooting from deep proved to be too much for No. 19 Iowa State in a lopsided 86-58 loss for the Cyclones at Gallagher-Iba Arena Sunday afternoon.
Iowa State (14-5, 2-5 Big 12) started with an Audi Crooks layup 24 seconds into the game. The Cowgirls started to control the game with their successful shooting from beyond the arc. Oklahoma State shot 37.8% from three point land, connecting on 14 of them. The Cowgirls capitalized on fast break opportunities with 22 points compared to the Cyclones’ three.
Crooks finished with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field. Jada Williams also finished with 15 points. Wofford transfer Evangelia Paulk scored a Cyclone career high with nine points.
Oklahoma State (16-4, 5-2 Big 12) started off the game a bit slow, but heated up very quickly shooting 43.9% from the field. Stailee Heard went for a game-high 18 points and she also tallied a triple-double, as she pulled down 17 rebounds and dished out 10 assists. Cowgirl Micah Gray opened up the game for the hosts with a 3-point basket and continued to let them fly all game, connecting on four on seven attempts. Achol Akot went on a quick 4-0 run by herself before Cyclones Alisa Williams and Reese Beaty each connected on a layup.
Amari Whiting extended the Cowgirl lead to four (10-6), but it shrunk back to two as Lilly Taulelei gathered in an offensive board and the put back. Lena Girardi’s jumper and an Akot free throw (with 0:00.7 remaining) ended the quarter 13-8 in favor of Oklahoma State.
The Cyclones trailed by three with 6:48 remaining in the first half, 17-14, but over the next 3:22 of play, the Cowgirls went on a 13-0 run. Crooks went 1-for-2 at the line with 3:07 remaining in the first half, bringing the Cyclones within 15 – 30-15 – the closest they’d get for the remainder of the game.
Oklahoma State ballooned their lead to 24 with 35 seconds remaining and went into halftime up 22 – 43-21.
In the third quarter, the Cyclones trimmed their 22-point halftime deficit to 51-35, but Haleigh Timmer answered with 10 points during a 15-0 run that pushed the lead to 66-35 by the end of the period.
Jada Williams scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter for the Cyclones, but by then, Iowa State trailed 69-42.
Crooks scored her final two points of the day at the charity stripe with 6:17 remaining.
Freya Jensen added a 3-point basket with 1:42 remaining for the Cyclones.
The Cyclones will return home for their first game of the spring semester against Cincinnati on Wednesday, tip is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
