Mavericks guard Klay Thompson saw Utah Jazz forward Ace Bailey crowding him on the perimeter and decided to teach the rookie a lesson.
With Bailey face-guarding him, the future Hall of Famer simply rose up and shot over the rookie for one of his six first-half 3-pointers. Moments later, with second-year forward Cody Williams — the younger brother of NBA champion Jalen Williams — closing hard, Thompson again elevated and drilled another shot over the contest.
Thompson caught fire early, scoring all 23 of his points in the first half.
Along the way, he moved into fourth place on the NBA’s all-time list for made 3-pointers, passing Damian Lillard during Saturday’s game against the Jazz. Only James Harden, Ray Allen and Stephen Curry now sit ahead of him.
Thompson continued his historic pace by knocking down a turnaround jumper at the 4:56 mark of the first quarter to reach 17,000 career points. He became the 109th player in NBA history to reach the milestone.
Thompson’s big night helped the Mavericks beat the Jazz 138-120 at the American Airlines Center on Saturday evening.
The game marked the fourth and final regular-season meeting between the teams. With the win, Dallas split the series, with the home team winning all four games.
