New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields limped to the sideline and then was carted to the locker room with a reported toe injury during Jets training camp in Florham Park, New Jersey, on Thursday.

Fields signed a two-year, $40 million contract with New York this offseason as the team moved on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers following a 5-12 season.

Much like Rodgers, who suffered a season-ending injury in his first game with the Jets, the 26-year-old Fields appears to have hit a serious roadblock before his career with New York even got started.

Head coach Aaron Glenn and his staff seemed to be shaken by the incident. It led to an immediate decision to take the offense off the field after the injury and shift the practice to special teams while the team regrouped.

Who is the Jets' backup quarterback?

A first-round draft pick by the Chicago Bears in 2021, Fields was expected to be the starter this season. Last year with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he started six games and accrued a 4-2 record as a starter, the best of his career.

“We believe Justin is the starter,” new Jets general manager Darren Mougey said in the offseason. “We believe in Justin. We believe we can win with Justin, so we’re excited about Justin.”

If Fields misses significant time, the Jets will have to rely on their other options at quarterback — namely NFL veteran Tyrod Taylor.

The Jets are Taylor's seventh team in his 14-year NFL career. He made two appearances in 2024, but did not start any games behind Rodgers.

In his most recent stint as a starter, Taylor went 2-3 under center for the New York Giants in 2023. His most successful stretch as a starter was with the Buffalo Bills from 2015-2017, when Taylor held a 22-20 record and led the Bills to the playoffs in 2017.

"My mindset and the way I condition myself to get ready for a season since my rookie year has been [to] approach each and every day as if you're the starter," Taylor told ESPN's Rich Cimini of entering the year as Fields' backup. "As a quarterback, you're an opportunity away, so you want to be well prepared for that opportunity."

Other members of the Jets quarterback room are second-year QB Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook, a rookie out of Missouri.
