New reports suggest that a deal between the New York Giants and John Harbaugh is having trouble getting over the finish line due to infrastructure differences within the organization that may be problematic for the veteran coach.
The NY Giants had some good options on the market to replace fired head coach Brian Daboll. However, they were gifted a perfect one a couple of weeks ago when the Baltimore Ravens decided to move on from legendary coach John Harbaugh after 18 impactful seasons.
From the moment he became available, Big Blue’s management was aggressive in trying to persuade him to be their franchise’s next head coach. Wooing him in dinners and offering a contract that is rumored to be for five years and $100 million. Furthermore, they have reportedly included a huge budget for his staff.
The team met with the coach in an official capacity this week at their facility, and talks reportedly went so well that he cancelled planned sitdowns with other teams. Yet, we enter the weekend, and a deal is still not yet completed despite the money side of things reportedly not being an issue.
Latest on What’s Holding Up Deal Between NY Giants and John Harbaugh
So what is holding up a finalized contract? On Saturday, The Athletic’s Dan Duggan revealed what could be the big sticking point. “Harbaugh didn’t report to the GM in Baltimore. He reported directly to owner Steve Bisciotti. That hasn’t been the Giants’ chain of command historically,” Duggan wrote in a post on X.
There had been early rumors that Harbaugh would want full roster control. However, the NY Giants are holding on to general manager Joe Schoen, and the two seemed to have hit it off during conversations between the two sides.
Adding to the idea that the Ravens simply did things differently than other organizations, ESPN NFL insider Jordan Raanan offered more details on the infrastructure setup the NY Giants may need to tweak to get the best version of Harbaugh.
“Change is difficult, but spoke with former players and coaches who were with the Ravens and Giants. To a man they suggested the Ravens operation was running at a different level. Everything from analytics, training, video, medical, and personnel,” Raanan wrote.
“Baltimore is known to spare no expense. Huge staff, top-notch facilities. One of the best-run organizations top to bottom in the NFL,” he added. “Several who know Harbaugh well suggested he would want major changes to the way the Giants organization operates.”
