MONTROSE, Colo. (KREX) – Montrose beats Fruita to start the season 14-0. The Red Hawks won with a final score of 47-39.
Fruita shined in the first half. The Wildcats led 28-23 after the first two quarters. Alivia Hopkins and Sophie Emerson were the main reason.
Hopkins scored 14, with four three pointers, in the half. She finished with 19. Emerson scored 10 in the game, all in the first half. She hit two three pointers of her own.
After the break, Montrose flipped the script. The Red Hawk defense showed a different intensity and held the Wildcats to two points in the third quarter and only 11 in the second half.
The Red Hawks used the second half to propel themselves to a 47-39 win. Landree Johnson scored a team high 10 points.
Five different Red Hawks scored at least ten points. Mayce Oberg and Sadie Wareham both had eight. Lilly Nelson and Ava Godbe finished with six. Maggie Legg had five.
Montrose’s next test to stay undefeated is Montezuma Cortez on Tuesday. Fruita has a chance to pick up a win over Junction that same day.
