Caitlin Clark opens up.
Why Caitlin Clark Meets With Psychologist 'Multiple Times a Week' originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
It’s an absolute honor for Caitlin Clark to be widely considered the face of the WNBA. At the same time, however, this esteemed title comes with an undeniable burden.
Dealing with the external and internal pressure of being the top superstar of a whole league is a daunting task. At just 23 years old, Clark has had to take on this challenge and everything that comes with it — both good and bad.
In a recent interview with Glamour, Clark opened up about the stress that comes with the throne. According to the former Iowa star, she places a high priority on taking care of both her body andher mind. For Clark, this includes speaking to a professional on a regular basis.
“We have a sports psychologist on our staff who I sometimes meet with multiple times a week, to not only talk about basketball but other things in life, and that’s something that’s been important to me over the course of my career,” she said. “I don’t just talk about things that stress me out but also the joys in my life, and that’s always a good reminder and reset for me.”
The Fever guard also revealed that she uses journaling as an outlet for her mental health and that it has become a pre-game ritual for her.
“It makes me really intentional about what I want to accomplish and is a good reset if I’m feeling nervous or anxious about the game, to kind of wipe that away,” she said.
Caitlin Clark Opens Up About the Challenges of Life in the WNBA
Clark is a fun-loving individual who never takes herself too seriously. She’s a fierce competitor on the basketball court who does not take any nonsense, but it’s as if she transforms into a different, more light-hearted person whenever she’s not playing ball.
While the cheerful persona is not a façade, Clark did admit that it’s not always fun and games for her. She, too, has to face hard times.
“When you have an athlete or role model you look up to, it’s easy to see them as always happy and living a glamorous life, but it’s not always like that,” she said. “We go through difficult things too, and being able to lean on people and tell them your frustrations or that you’re not OK is really important.”
Just recently, Clark re-aggravated the groin injury that kept her out for two weeks in June and July. She was seen on the brink of tears after sustaining the injury as she covered her head with a towel on the bench.
This issue has now cost her two games on the sidelines, and the Fever have confirmed that she is set to miss a third contest on Thursday when they battle the Las Vegas Aces. These are trying times for Clark as she deals with her third injury spell of the season, underscoring the importance of a strong support system for her.
