FC Bayern will get some familiar faces back in the squad.
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany offered a big reveal in his press conference ahead of the team’s weekend Bundesliga match vs. RB Leipzig — Jamal Musiala is expected to suit up.
“If everything goes well today, Jamal will be there tomorrow. That’s great for him. With Joshua Kimmich, we’re also looking at training today. He might even be able to start tomorrow,” Kompany said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “(Musiala) exudes a lot of positive energy. At the moment, even the little things are great. You appreciate everything much more. Jamal is experiencing that right now, as is Alphonso Davies. I want to protect both of them. The priority right now is integration. At some point, they’ll reach the level they were at before their injuries. When you play all the time, your fitness comes from playing. Now he’s had time to rebuild his body, strengthen his mobility and speed. That’s why injuries give you time to come back even stronger.”
That is MASSIVE news for the Bavarians, particularly with Kimmich, who could fill the currently open role at right-back where Konrad Laimer (injury), Josip Stanišić (injury), and Sacha Boey (illness) all out.
“We have a lot of players out at right-back, but we’ve dealt with this situation in the past. Many other players can play there. At the beginning of the season, we had a lot of players out at left-back. The guys will miss a few games, but it could have been worse. Josip Stanišić and Konrad Laimer will be back soon,” said Kompany. “Sacha is still ill, yes. But Phonzy has had a good week.”
When asked specifically about Kimmich playing right-back, Kompany did not rule it out.
“Everything is possible. Right now it’s not about who plays where, it’s about having guys who help the team. Everyone can be asked to help out in another position. When three right-backs are out, someone else has to step up. But right now, the priority is for the other guys to get fit again,” Kompany remarked.
As for the game itself, Kompany is expecting a battle from RB Leipzig.
“Leipzig have a young team, so it’s possible that things won’t go perfectly in the first game. They were close to us for a long time after that and won many games. Many of their players have developed very well. Their coach has also been there longer now. They are a strong attacking team, it could be a great game. It will be intense, both teams can score goals. It will be very interesting,” Kompany stated.
