Sky Germany reports that VfB Stuttgart are interested in Hoffenheim midfielder Grischa Prömel, who will be available on a free transfer in the summer.
The Swabians are said to have already held talks with the 31-year-old over a potential move in the summer, but they face competition from other Bundesliga sides, as well as teams from abroad.
While the midfielder’s current club Hoffenheim are also interested in extending his contract and was in negotiations over a new deal, but they have now been put on hold.
Prömel was born in Bad Canstatt, a district of Stuttgart, but never got the chance to play for VfB, coming through the academy of Stuttgarter Kickers, Hoffenheim and Karlsruher before moving to Union Berlin and later returning to Sinsheim in 2022.
This season has been one of Prömel’s best, scoring five and assisting two in 16 Bundesliga games for Christian Ilzer’s side. During his four-year spell at Hoffenheim, Prömel’s time has been affected by two serious injuries: first, he broke his ankle in his first season, and then, last season, he tore his ACL.
How could Prömel improve Stuttgart’s midfield?
The 31-year-old would not be the first midfielder to swap Hoffenheim for Stuttgart under Sebastian Hoeneß. Angelo Stiller also followed his former head coach to Mercedestraße and has been an immediate hit.
If Prömel decides to go back to his hometown, he would prove to be an upgrade on Atakan Karazor. The captain has proven to be a liability at times, and summer signing Chema Andres has also shown that he is an upgrade on the Turkish international. While Nikolas Nartey has also shown that he could have a future at the MHP Arena.
