Augsburg took the lead deep into first half stoppage time when Alexis Claude-Maurice unleashed a stunner into the top right corner from some 30 metres.
Claude-Maurice hit the outside post after the break, team-mate Anton Kade was denied by Frederik Rönnow on a dangerous counter attack, and the Union keeper was also on his guard against a late effort from Robin Fellhauer.
Augsburg then paid the price for the missed chances by conceding the late equalizer and remain 15th, three points above the danger zone. Union are eight points ahead of them in ninth.
Fans threw a large number of bouncy balls onto the pitch during the first half, seemingly in protest of a rare Thursday night kick-off in the league.
The match was to complete the first half of the season, but three other games - St Pauli v RB Leipzig, Werder Bremen v Hoffenheim and SV Hamburg v Borussia Mönchengladbach - had to be cancelled on Saturday and Tuesday owing to winter weather and are yet to be played.
