Christoph Freund does not rule out loan move for big Bayern Munich talent Javier Fernández

Bayern could be sending another youngster out to (temporary) pastures anew.

For around the last 16 months, Bayern Munich talent Javier Fernández has been struggling with injuries. These struggles were a real shame, not least because he had really impressed prior to this injury in multiple age groups following his move from Atlético Madrid in 2023. He was certainly outgrowing Bayern’s U-23s by the time of his injury when he got hurt. Fernández has finally overcome these injury issues at the time of writing, however. The question now is this: Is the Regionalliga Bayern, the fourth division of German football, the right place for the Spaniard’s development? Or can he find enough game time after his injury in a more difficult league to boost his development?

Certainly, it seems Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund is not ruling out the latter option. Speaking to Sky Germany reporter Kerry Hau, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, Freund had this to say about Fernández: “I wouldn’t rule that out. Javi is a very interesting player. It’s crucial that he stays healthy – but also that he can play football at a high level.”

Another factor to consider is that the Spaniard’s contract still officially runs for just 6 more months until June 2026. A recent report that the Spaniard has signed a new contract may render this problem moot, and Freund would certainly not consider a loan without a contract extension. Still, nothing is official yet for a reason. There are a lot of factors to consider in making Fernández’s next move. Perhaps a loan to the 3. Bundesliga would be best, to ensure the Spaniard plays in a more competitive league without really running into the risk that the combination of a step up in quality and joining a team midway through the season as a loanee restrict his game time.
