Liverpool assess right back depth amid injury concerns

Liverpool are being nudged towards a familiar Premier League solution as their options on the right side of defence come under scrutiny. With Arne Slot now firmly established at Anfield after guiding the club to the Premier League title in 2024/25, recruitment is expected to remain measured rather than reactive. Still, circumstances have a habit of forcing conversations.

That reality sharpened last week when Conor Bradley suffered a serious knee injury in the 0-0 draw away at Arsenal, an issue that has ruled him out for the rest of the campaign. Suddenly, depth has become a talking point rather than a theoretical concern, even if reports from David Ornstein suggest FSG are not planning a January move in that position.

Michael Kayode profile draws attention

One name gaining quiet traction is Michael Kayode of Brentford. The 21 year old has gone from promising addition to reliable Premier League performer in short order, a trajectory that rarely goes unnoticed. Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown believes the fit is obvious should Liverpool ever decide to act.

He told Football Insider: “Whenever there’s somebody performing at a high level in the Premier League, there’s going to be interest from other clubs across Europe. He’s got that Premier League experience behind him now where he’s proving he can perform, and in a position where a lot of clubs will be looking.

“Liverpool could do with a player like that in their current situation. He’s certainly one who would fit the bill if he was to become available. They’d like to bring in a new right-back, so maybe that’s an option, but as I said before, a lot will depend on Brentford, and they’re not going to be willing to let him go.”

Brentford influence and unique attributes

Kayode has made a strong impression at the Gtech Community Stadium, blending athleticism with end product. Liverpool supporters have already felt his impact, with Brentford’s opening goal in the 3-2 win over the Reds in October stemming from his long throw. That weapon is eye catching, yet it barely scratches the surface.

Liverpool planning beyond short term fixes

With Jeremie Frimpong and the inexperienced Calvin Ramsay now the recognised senior options, Liverpool are unlikely to panic. Slot’s squad building has leaned towards sustainability rather than quick fixes, and that philosophy is unlikely to shift because of one injury.

Still, if Brentford’s impressive push towards the top end of the table fades into a more familiar mid table finish, Kayode may attract a queue of suitors. Liverpool may not move immediately, but he looks like a name worth filing away as planning for future windows quietly continues.
