We’re less than a month away from baseball season, with NC State set to begin play in Puerto Rico against Washington on Feb. 13. Elliott Avent joined D1Baseball’s Daron Vaught and Bradley Smart this week to discuss his team and the season ahead.
Avent said that State could have played in a tournament in Texas (this one, probably) to begin the year but opted instead for Puerto Rico after consulting with his “great friend” Eduardo Perez (who knew!).
He spoke about some of the returning guys who impressed in the fall (Luke Nixon, Drew Lanphere, Brayden Fraasman, Cooper Consiglio), and said he feels most confident about the pitching staff at this point. He also mentioned that one unnamed pitcher recently sliced open a finger on his non-throwing hand while cutting up deer meat (?!), so that’s a thing that happened. Let’s hope that’s not a bad omen.
There’s plenty more in the discussion, including insight on Jacob Dudan’s transition to starter. He’s been working on a third pitch (changeup?) this offseason in preparation. That’ll be one of the major storylines for this team early in the year.
