Three interesting things to know about Stanford ahead of UNC matchup

Stanford features an ACC scoring star, plays in historic Maples Pavilion and owns a rare recent win over UNC heading into Wednesday’s matchup.

No. 14 North Carolina will travel out West for the first of two ACC road games in the San Francisco Bay Area to face the Stanford Cardinal.

In its last outing, North Carolina bounced back from a tough loss to SMU with an 87-84 win over Wake Forest on Saturday night, securing the program’s 500th victory in the Dean Smith Center.

Stanford (13-4, 2-2 ACC) has the tools to give UNC problems. The Cardinal upset Louisville and beat a good Virginia Tech team.

Here are three interesting things about Stanford heading into Wednesday’s matchup.

Stanford has one of the best players in the country in guard Ebuka Okorie. The true freshman averages 22.1 points per game, the second-best mark in the ACC and the eighth-best nationally. He also leads the ACC in free throws made and ranks third in free throw attempts.

Stanford’s arena

Maples Pavilion has been the home of the Stanford Cardinal since 1969. The 7,233-seat arena is home to its men’s and women’s basketball teams and its gymnastics and volleyball teams. The wrestling team also competes in Maples Pavilion when there is a big meet.

Stanford has only one win over UNC

In 14 meetings between the programs, Carolina has won all but one. That loss came last season as Stanford stunned a North Carolina team that was on the bubble at that time.

Jaylen Blakes hit the go-ahead jumper with less than two seconds left as Stanford edged North Carolina 72-71 at the Dean Smith Center, handing the Tar Heels their first home loss while leading at halftime since 2020.
