Newport County have signed striker James Crole from JD Cymru Premier club Penybont for an undisclosed fee.

Welshman Crole joined Penybont in July 2024 following his released by Cardiff City, for whom he made one senior appearance in the EFL Cup.

He was joint top scorer in the Cymru Premier last season with 16 goals and has scored a further 11 goals in this campaign.

The 21-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with League Two strugglers Newport and could make his debut at Gillingham on Saturday.

Crole is the latest in a line of players to join County from the Cymru Premier in recent years.

County previously signed James Waite and Nathan Wood from Penybont while Will Evans, Keenan Patten, Kai Whitmore and Lee Jenkins have also moved to Rodney Parade from the Welsh top flight.

Crole is also the second Penybont player to move to the English system during the January transfer window after Gabe Kircough signed for Forest Green Rovers.

Crole follows midfielder Harrison Biggins by joining Newport this month, with boss Christian Fuchs working on a number of deals including a loan move for Cardiff winger Tanatswa Nyakuhwa.
