Andre Onana has reportedly not given up hope of being Manchester United’s No.1, despite spending the current season away from the club on loan.

It goes without saying that the goalkeeper already has a turbulent history at United, and, by the time 2025/2026 got underway, he had been demoted as Ruben Amorim’s first-choice between the sticks.

Instead, Altay Bayindir occupied the role for the opening Premier League matches of the campaign, with Onana only being called upon for United’s Carabao Cup opener away to Grimsby Town.

When he oversaw an all-too-common horror display, conceding twice in regular time and 12 penalties in the shootout, Amorim decided he’d seen enough of Onana.

He was subsequently shopped out on loan to Trabzonspor late in the summer. However, as there was no buy option or obligation included by either side in the terms, the Cameroonian will return to Old Trafford once his temporary deal expires and negotiate his next steps.

From his point of view, he hopes that he can continue in M16.

Onana is tied to United until 2028, potentially even 2029, given the one-year option in his contract.

According to the iPaper, sources close to the 29-year-old believe that ‘if a head coach comes in who favours goalkeepers playing the ball out with their feet – like Xavi – they may turn to the Trabzonspor loanee once more’.

"

Ultimately, you’d imagine Onana is only setting himself up for disappointment.

United are beyond pleased with how Senne Lammens has adapted to the English top flight and established himself as a reliable shot-stopper, leaving no room for the likes of Onana, who’s accumulated a catalogue of costly errors, to swoop in and steal the spot.
