Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the team didn’t do anything at full speed ahead of Week 18’s matchup because it was the team’s third game in 13 days—the culmination of the previous three games factored into their practice prep.
Shanahan said that, based on how Eric Kendricks, Garret Wallow, and Marques Sigle performed last week, the coaching staff has more confidence going into the game with Brown, Gifford, and Winters not practicing.
Shanahan said the 49ers were in the building for roughly 3.5 hours today, compared to the usual seven: “We’ll do all walk-through, nothing full speed. We won’t go against each other at all. We’ll see how it goes, see how guys feel, and we’ll decide what we want to do tomorrow.”
Trent Williams will be listed with a hamstring/vet day. Shanahan said, “We’re going to really embrace having him back this week” after Williams missed Week 18.
Rookie linebacker Nick Martin is still in the concussion protocol.
The 49ers are opening Fred Warner’s window, “So he can do some stuff like that. We’re not doing much, so he’ll walk through out there with us today and things like that. Hoping he can be ready for next week.”
Shanahan said the approach is solely based on what doctors tell him:
I’m like Fred, if he feels good and tells me he’s good, I’m probably going to think he’s good and trust him to get out there. But you can’t always think with your heart and emotionally.
So you ask doctors where he’s at. All these things that these guys have to pass, all of these protocols that we have, like sprinting and jumping and things like that. He’s got to hit all of those before we feel it’s safe.
Shanahan said that as soon as Fred is ready, there will be no decisions to make. He also mentioned how Warner hasn’t needed to advocate for his return verbally. He’s done his talking with his rehab.
This feels like a bit of gamesmanship from Shanahan. We’re a couple of days removed from Shanahan saying the chances of Warner practicing this week aren’t very high. He made sure to say the Niners aren’t doing any full-contact on Tuesday.
George Kittle will have surgery on Wednesday.
