The Browns four-way QB battle included more 11-on-11 reps for the rookies with the first two groups. Here's a closer look at the day.
BEREA — Browns fans got their first look at the team's four-man quarterback competition on July 25.
The third day of training camp marked the first practice open to the fans. That meant their first look at Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders in action.
The Browns seemed to format the practice to make sure the fans got to see plenty of the quarterbacks in action against a defense. It was the most team-focused practice of the first three, and the longest at nearly 90 minutes.
Once the individual work was completed, the team split up for red-zone one-on-one drills from the 20. Flacco and Pickett work on one end, while Gabriel and Sanders worked at the other.
The primary team 11-on-11 period saw Flacco and Pickett each alternated a pair of series, before Gabriel got a series with the first unit and Sanders got his first work with the second group. Pickett and Flacco also did an 11-on-11 walk-through period.
The modified seven-on-seven red-zone period was split over two fields, with Pickett and Flacco on one and the rookies on the other. Flacco, Gabriel and Pickett then concluded practice with roughly six 11-on-11 plays each.
Here's a look at what each of the four quarterbacks did during those group and team periods.
Joe Flacco's Browns training camp highlights July 25
- Flacco was first up on 11-on-11, getting series of four and three. Three of them were runs.
- Flacco's only completion was a dump-off to Blake Whiteheart, as he dealt with continuous pressure from the Browns' defensive front.
- Myles Garrett tipped Flacco's first pass attempt, then forced him to dirt the ball on another throw.
- In the red-zone seven-on-seven, Flacco did start with a pair of completions, one each to Jamari Thrash and Cedric Tillman. The last two throws were incompletions, including a final one in which Tillman was injured in the back of the end zone.
- Flacco's final play in the first 11-on-11 period was a throw-away while pressured.
Dillon Gabriel's Browns training camp highlights July 25
- Gabriel got his first 11-on-11 snaps of training camp with the first unit. Two of the three plays, though, were runs.
- The one called pass play ended up with Gabriel running the ball while pressured.
- Gabriel's second 11-on-11 period consisted of six plays with the third unit. He was 1-for-4 with a completion was to rookie Gage Larvadain, who he also targeted on a deep out but the two couldn't quite connect.
- Gabriel went first on the rookie field in seven-on-seven. It produced no highlights, which was par for the course for all four quarterbacks in that session.
Kenny Pickett's Browns training camp highlights July 25
- Pickett's highlight during his two 11-on-11 series was a scramble where he found a cutback lane and ran for a long touchdown.
- Pickett did hit Luke Floriea on a scramble, with Floriea appearing to get his feet down before stepping out of bounds. He also was nearly intercepted on his other pass in that four-play series.
- Pickett's four-play red-zone period saw him go 1-for-4. He had an out route to Jerry Jeudy that he couldn't quite come down with right before hitting DeAndre Carter on an out route for a score.
- Carson Schwesinger tipped Pickett's final throw, a pass intended for David Njoku.
Shedeur Sanders' Browns training camp highlights July 25
- Sanders got his first work with the top two offensive groups for the first time in an 11-on-11 period.
- The rookie was 2-of-2, with a quick-read out to Luke Floriea and an impressive crossing route to Brendan Bates to end his three-play series.
- The red-zone seven-on-seven period was, as it was for the other three quarterbacks, a bit of a struggle.
- Sanders went second in the final 11-on-11, getting six plays, three of which were runs.
- Sanders' first play was a scramble on a broken play.
- The best throw of the day for Sanders came on his third play of that series, a deep curl route to Blake Whiteheart.
