Florian Plettenberg reports that Mainz midfielder Hong Hyun-Seok is preparing to switch loan locales. The 14-times-capped South Korean international’s Bundesliga outfit initially loaned him out to FC Nantes at the beginning of this season, but he has only made six competitive appearances for Les Canaris this year. All parties involved find themselves dissatisfied with the arrangement.
It is such that Mainz are preparing to send Hong back to his old Belgian outfit KAA Gent on a six-month-loan. At his peak in the Belgian Pro League, Hong was considered a €9m-valued professional. Mainz signed Hong from Gent on a €4m transfer in August of 2024. Former FSV head coach Bo Henriksen nevertheless found himself unimpressed with his new player after four ineffective Bundesliga starts at the beginning of the 2024/25 campaign.
Hong didn’t start again under Henriksen after matchday five. His estimated market value has steadily declined, dropping to €3.5m in the latest transfermarkt update. Plettenberg reports that Mainz still wish to retain Hong and that a purchase option will not be part of the new loan accord. Hong remains under contract with the Rheinhessen until 2028.
