One of the best Gainesville area prospects in recent years is on the move. Former Newberry DL Jarquez Carter transferred to Miami after just one year at Ohio State.
There's an old adage in sports: "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em."
Looks like one of the Gainesville area's best prospects in recent years took that to heart.
Former Newberry football defensive lineman Jarquez Carter will transfer from Ohio State to Miami. Hayes Fawcett of On3 reported the decision, and Carter confirmed it Monday evening on X.
He’ll join Newberry teammate and fellow DL Mykah Newton, who committed to the Hurricanes when Carter chose the Buckeyes.
Carter entered the transfer portal Friday, a week and a half after OSU’s season ended at the hands of UM 24-14 in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic on December 31.
A four-star recruit by 247Sports Composite, Carter was the No. 18 defensive lineman and the No. 31 prospect in Florida. He committed to Ohio State in July 2024 in part due to his relationship with defensive line coach Larry Johnson and head coach Ryan Day.
“I love speaking with Coach Day because I always find he teaches me something,” Carter said when he signed with the Buckeyes in December 2024.
Carter held offers from nearly every top program in America. 247’s Crystal Ball expected him to commit to Miami in high school, but he chose Ohio State at the last minute.
“I had so much good things to say about Miami,” Carter said when he committed. “It's nothing bad about Miami, it's just I talked to my family about it and Ohio State was the school.”
A year later, Carter will end up in Coral Gables after all and play under Miami defensive line coach and NFL Hall of Famer Jason Taylor.
In his lone season in Columbus, Carter played in four games and had one tackle vs. Grambling State.
Carter led the Panthers to their greatest success in recent memory. They made the playoffs in three of four years. He won the program’s first district title in two decades and two playoff games in his senior year — when he was named the Gainesville Sun’s Big School Defensive Player of the Year.
