Marlins predicted to trade young quality starting pitcher by trade deadline

The Miami Marlins have a lot of contenders interested in two starting pitchers, but one has done far better than the other.

The Miami Marlins were expected to move former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara at the trade deadline, but his teammate may be the one who actually gets moved.

Alcantara, 29, was supposed to be the ideal trade chip for contenders looking to add a top-notch starter.

Unfortunately, Alcantara has been horrible for most of the season. Alcantara is 5-9 with a 6.66 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP in 20 starts this season.

The Marlins don’t need to move Alcantara if they don’t get the right deal, as he is under contract through this season.

His teammate on the other hand, Edward Cabrera, while also under contract through next season, has pitched very well and could bring back a haul to Miami.

Cabrera, 27, is 4-4 with a 3.48 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP in 17 starts. He had a rough beginning to the season but has settled in nicely.

The Athletic’s Andy McCullough predicts that the Marlins will sell high on Cabrera and move him by the trade deadline.

“Should the Marlins sell low on Sandy Alcantara? Maybe. Should the team sell high on Cabrera? Definitely,” wrote McCullough. “Cabrera has cut down on his walks during the best season of his career. There is an argument for Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix to hold onto Cabrera, who is under team control through 2028. But the risk of injury or regression is significant enough that Miami should explore his market aggressively.”

Several teams have been interested in Cabrera but given how thin the starting pitcher market is and the years of control on Cabrera’s contract, teams will have to give up a lot to acquire him.
