Ex-Mariners manager tabbed as option for Yankees if Aaron Boone is fired

The New York Yankees won the American League last season, but have not been playing their best baseball as of late. Many fans are wondering if Aaron Boone's job is safe.

The Yankees have Boone under contract through 2027, and there is little, if any, indication that the team is thinking about a change at manager. However, that will not stop speculation on the matter, at least not until the Yankees start playing better.

The team is 21-24 since the start of June, and has lost the lead in the American League East. If Boone is fired, FanSided's Jake Elman suggested Scott Servais could be his successor. He served as the Seattle Mariners manager for nine seasons.

"Servais is another candidate with no Yankees connections, which likely hurts his chances before it even begins," wrote Elman. "However, Servais’ resume speaks for itself, even after the Mariners fired him midway through 2024. He frequently kept the Mariners in the playoff hunt, which in itself is remarkable given how the Astros have dominated the AL West. It may also help the Yankees that Servais has legitimate front office experience, serving as an Angels’ assistant GM from 2011-15. He’s a former catcher who has seen teams from the playing side, the front office side, and the managerial side. What more could the Yankees want in a candidate?"

Servais does not have much postseason success, but he managed to keep the Mariners relevant despite managing in the same division as the Houston Astros during their dominance. He is currently a special assistant to the San Diego Padres.

"Servais went 680-642 in nine seasons managing the Mariners from 2016-24, leading Seattle to a 2022 ALDS appearance," wrote Elman. "The biggest problem that Servais ran into in Seattle, though, was the Houston Astros. Remember, Houston has won the AL West in every non-shortened season since 2017, helping 90-win and 88-win Mariners teams miss the playoffs in 2021 and 2023."
