Manchester United are expected to make a decision on their caretaker manager this week. The Red Devils parted ways with Ruben Amorim earlier this month after a run of just three wins in ten games, and placed Darren Fletcher in interim charge.
The English giants are looking for a temporary manager to help salvage the season before a permanent appointment is made over the summer. Recent reports have named Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick, Ruud van Nistelrooy and even Fletcher as options for the job.
However, the Scot’s position has come under scrutiny following the disappointing 2-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup third round.
An earlier report relayed by The Peoples Person stated that Solskjaer is the favourite to take over as caretaker manager, with Carrick open to joining as his assistant. However, a contrasting update has now emerged.
Carrick has convinced INEOS
According to The Guardian, Carrick has emerged as the frontrunner in the race following a convincing meeting with INEOS.
“Michael Carrick has emerged as the favourite candidate to be Manchester United’s interim manager for the rest of the season ahead of Ole Gunnar Solskjær after the interview process, with the club’s executive expected to finalise the decision on Monday.”
“While Omar Berrada, the chief executive, and Jason Wilcox, the director of football, are understood to have not made a formal offer, they are leaning towards Carrick, sources have informed the Guardian.”
“This follows both Carrick and Solskjær having face-to-face discussions with the hierarchy. Berrada and Wilcox met Carrick on Thursday and Solskjær on Saturday at the club’s Carrington training ground.”
“Solskjær was originally viewed as the prime candidate to return to United to take up a position he held from December 2018 to March 2019, before being made permanent manager until November 2021 – but now Carrick has edged in front of him.”
The report adds that the United hierarchy are eager to give the caretaker manager ample time to get his message across ahead of the upcoming Manchester derby on Saturday, 17 January.
Carrick’s managerial record at United
Carrick joined Jose Mourinho’s backroom staff after his retirement from football in the summer of 2018. The Englishman retained his position following Solskjaer’s arrival in December that year as the Portuguese’s replacement.
Carrick was briefly in interim charge after the Norwegian lost his job, and left the club when Ralf Rangnick took charge for the rest of the season. The Englishman took over at Middlesbrough in October 2022 and was in charge until June 2025, when he was removed from his position.

Final Thoughts
United have a tough run of games ahead, with City and Arsenal up next in the Premier League. As such, the Red Devils must finalise the appointment as early as possible and end all speculation surrounding the position.
