Training camp is starting to heat up and the Matt LaFluer mentioned that one his rookie won't be participating in practice on Friday. However, he didn't comment as to why.
The Green Bay Packers decided to draft wide receivers Matthew Golden and Savion Williams in the 2025 NFL Draft. This move crowded the receiver room, and it’s likely that a roster adjustment will happen eventually. Dairyland Express’ Brian Sampson believes Golden could challenge GM Brian Gutekunst’s usual philosophy.
“The Green Bay Packers are no strangers to playing the long game with their first-round picks. General manager Brian Gutekunst has built a reputation for drafting developmental talent—guys with high ceilings who need time to adjust and grow into their roles,” Dairyland Express’ Brian Sampson wrote. “But that trend might finally break in 2025. Still, Golden might already be the best of the bunch. Don’t be surprised if he’s running with the starters when camp opens on July 23. He’s that explosive. It would be easy for head coach Matt LaFleur to plug Golden into the starting lineup right away. Slide Reed into the slot, keep Doubs outside, and suddenly the Packers have a dangerous trio of receivers with real playmaking juice.”
Golden has also publicly stated his confidence in the Packers’ Super Bowl chances. Meanwhile, during training camp, Williams has been impressing coaches and fans alike.
“Plays like his one-handed catch on Wednesday remind us of exactly that. Williams enters the league with arguably as much upside as any wide receiver in this year's draft class, including Golden. It will take work on the practice field and development from his coaches, but Williams can become a do-it-all player who can unlock a new level to LaFleur's offense,” Lombardi Ave’s Freddie Boston wrote.
However, on Friday morning, head coach Matt LaFleur announced that Williams would not be participating in practice.
“LaFleur says Savion Williams won’t practice today. Declines to say why,” The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman wrote.

The odd part is LaFleur declining to comment on the reason for Williams’ absence. There are many possibilities, but the hope is that it’s not a serious issue and just a one-time occurrence. Williams has been considered the steal of the draft for the Packers and is a highly touted player.
