Dan Campbell Puts Detroit Lions' Second Year Pro on Notice With Latest Comments

Offensive line has suddenly become a key topic for the Detroit Lions heading into the 2025-26 season following the retirement of four-time Pro Bowler Frank Ragnow at the center position. Ragnow's retirement means the Lions will have to reshuffle their offensive line, potentially playing utility lineman Graham Glasgow at center full-time in Ragnow's stead. Tackle is another position of interest heading into the season as the Lions are on the hunt for depth, hoping to get it from multiple young players.

On Wednesday, head coach Dan Campbell's comments on a second year pro were shared, painting the picture of a player who has what it takes to fortify the position, and one who still needs plenty of seasoning.

Detroit Lions offensive tackle Giovanni Manu (59) gets into position before a play against Pittsburgh Steelers during the first half of a preseason game at Ford Field in Detroit on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

Standing at 6-foot-7, 354 pounds, offensive tackle Giovvani Manu, a 2024 fourth-round pick out of the University of British Columbia, was singled out by Campbell amid a string of promising but uneven practice performances.

"He'll take two steps up and then one step back, and so that's kind of where he's at," Campbell said according to DetroitLions.com. "He'll have a good day and then there's a couple of things that'll slide that we've got to keep working on with him. And he knows this."

Manu worked out with starting left tackle Taylor Decker and others in Arizona this offseason and is hoping his experience will translate to the NFL field with a Super Bowl in Detroit's sights this season.

"I got to learn so much from him," Manu said after practice on Tuesday.

"We even talked about non-football stuff. He wanted me there to workout with him and he's a great guy. He's a role model to me. There's so much I've learned from him. Just the way I carry myself, too. Hopefully one day I get to fill his shoes."
