The Raiders' star defensive tackle is still on the road to recovery.
Pete Carroll "Uncertain" About Christian Wilkins' Injury Progress originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Las Vegas Raiders brought in star defensive tackle Christian Wilkins last offseason. Former general manager Tom Telesco and head coach Antonio Pierce gave him a four-year deal worth $110 million, but he only played in five games during the 2024 NFL season.
Wilkins broke his foot in Week 5, and after suffering multiple setbacks in his rehabilitation process, he has yet to be on the field for the Raiders during the offseason program. With the preseason rapidly approaching, his status for 2025 is in doubt.
New head coach Pete Carroll spoke to the media on Tuesday before training camp begins in Las Vegas, and the veteran leader had no real update about Wilkins' progress.
"It's still uncertain. It's still uncertain. We sort of have to wait it out," Carroll said.
Carroll and new general manager John Spytek were not responsible for bringing Wilkins to the Raiders, but given his immense contract and high potential, they would love to get the star defensive tackle back into the fold.
In his first five NFL seasons with the Miami Dolphins, Wilkins played in 81 of a potential 83 games, recording 22.5 sacks, 355 tackles, including 43 for a loss, as well as 19 passes defended and six fumble recoveries.
This prowess was expected to be a huge benefit to the Raiders' already-stout defensive line, which featured players like Maxx Crosby, Malcolm Koonce and Adam Butler. However, Wilkins recorded just 2.0 sacks and 17 tackles, including two for a loss, in 2024.
Wilkins' disappointing campaign can be redeemed if he can get healthy and help the Raiders in 2025. With Geno Smith now at quarterback in Las Vegas, the team cannot afford to squander its potential.
