New Report Hints at Jerry Jones’ $7 Million Master Plan for Dak Prescott

Did Jerry Jones' have an ulterior motive in waiting on Dak Prescott deal?

Quarterbacks are cashing in like never before in today’s NFL. Every few months, there’s a new record-breaking deal, a fresh contract that resets the market. And right in the thick of it is America’s Team, the Dallas Cowboys.

Their franchise QB, Dak Prescott, already landed a hefty payday, but it’s the timing of that deal that’s raising eyebrows. Some analysts now think Jerry Jones may have had something bigger in mind because the delay in getting the deal done? It cost the Cowboys a cool $7 million.

ESPN analyst Adam Schefter shared his thoughts on the same, saying, “I don't know. Maybe Jerry liked that everybody was talking about Dak Prescott all summer. Maybe he got $7M worth of PR. That definitely could be the case.”

Looking back at last offseason, it’s hard not to wonder what the Cowboys were thinking. There were no early contract talks with Prescott in February, which caught some people off guard.

Then Jared Goff signed with the Detroit Lions for $52 million a year, followed by a string of other quarterback deals. Before long, Prescott’s market value had ballooned to $60 million.

Had Dallas acted earlier around the time Goff signed, it likely could’ve locked Dak in for $52 million or $53 million. Waiting cost them an extra $7 million. According to Schefter, Jones might have had an ulterior motive in mind for the wait, but we might never know.

On Sept. 8, the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott locked in a massive four-year, $240 million extension that, at the time, made him the highest-paid player in NFL history.

The deal, announced by Jerry Jones, kept Prescott in a Cowboys jersey through the 2028 season. What really turned heads, though, was the guaranteed money: $231 million, the most in league history, edging out Deshaun Watson’s fully guaranteed $230 million deal with the Browns.
