ACC Roundup – UNC Survives, Pack Romps And Virginia Rolls

A fun day up and down the league

In Saturday’s ACC Action, Boston College gave Louisville a fine game, losing 75-62, Virginia thumped Stanford 70-55, Miami rolled past Georgia Tech 91-81, NC State laid waste to FSU 113-69, Virginia Tech slipped by Cal 78-75, Clemson took care of Notre Dame 76-61 and Wake Forest pushed UNC to the final buzzer, losing 87-84.

UNC had a 15 point lead with 9:50 to play and while teams come back from that sort of deficit all the time, there was a time when it was inconceivable that the Tar Heels would give up almost all of that and be in a two-point game with :34 seconds left to play.

Hubert Davis said his team “took the foot off the pedal” and let Wake come back. Although Caleb Wilson and Henri Veesaar dominated inside again, with 47 points and 21 rebounds between the, apparently the Tar Heels somehow overlooked Caleb Wilson for most of the second half.

Juke Harris and Nate Calmese both had 28 points but no one else offered much help. The other three starters combined for 9 points. Mekhi Mason and 6-10 Cooper Schwieger both had 9 off the bench but somehow, Schwieger, a healthy-sized guy, got 0 rebounds in 29 minutes.

Still, the Tar Heels won and that’s the bottom line. Wake Forest falls to 10-7, which is going to be hard to overcome.

Boston College actually had a half-time lead but it’s understandable to an extent. Mikel Brown is still out and Ryan Conwell, who was so explosive in the first half against Duke, was also out after banging his knee into someone else’s in practice. We think Kobe Rogers was out again too.

But Louisville turned up the pressure in the second half and came back to win 72-65. To be clear, they should have won, but they had to overcome some stuff too, and they certainly did. So good on them.

One more thing – former G-Leaguer London Johnson was going to redshirt. That’s apparently off now. He didn’t play in this one but look for him soon.

Stanford faced a much more talented team in Virginia and lost by 15. Ebuka Okorie, who has been sensational so far, was held to 14. That’s a good night for most players, but he’s been racking up big games lately and this was not one of them. Stanford shot just 19% on threes and 32% overall. Virginia forced six shot clock violations, which is about as good as we can recall.

Thijs DeRidder led the ‘Hoos with 22 points but just 3 rebounds. He was out rebounded by Chance Mallory, about a foot shorter, who had 4 rebounds in less time.

Miami won its 9th straight, sending Georgia back north with a 10 point loss. Tre Donaldson had a monster game with 27 points and 10 assists. Shelton Henderson had 17 points on 7-9/2-4 shooting. Georgia Tech was outmatched and Damon Stoudamire still needs more talent, but you have to give him this: his teams compete.

NC State romped all over the Seminoles, scoring the most points ever at home against FSU and it was never close. State just buried them.

The Pack hit 19-35 threes (54%) and 38-69 overall (55%). They basically won every aspect of the game. FSU shot very poorly (22% on threes, 39% overall) and had just 7 assists on 22 baskets. It just wasn’t a good day for Florida State. Even Robert McCray, who has been terrific, had just 10 points.

Darrion Williams didn’t shoot well for State but finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Paul McNeil had 21 and Ven-Allen Lubin had 19. It was a good day for the Wuffies.

Syracuse hit 10 threes and defended Pitt well, holding the Panthers to 5-26 on their threes and 44% overall. Donnie Freeman scored 22 as he continues to knock the rust off. JJ Starling had 19, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

It was a good game for Syracuse, but it was the second time in a row that the Orange let a significant lead slip away. They still need to work out some bugs, but the ‘Cuse is undeniably better than last season.

Virginia Tech broke a two-game losing streak Saturday with the win over Cal. Look a little closer though: Virginia Tech’s last five games have all been really tight. Elon was a one-point OT win. Virginia took three overtimes. Wake was a three-point loss and Stanford just one.

No surprise that the Cal game was close. Cal led much of the way before Virginia Tech pulled ahead 68-67. Jaden Schutt split a pair of free throws with :06 left to give the Hokies a 77-75 lead before Jailen Bedford split on a pair of his own.

Schutt finished with 11 while Amani Hansberry ended with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Dai Dai Ames racked up 21 while Chris Bell finished with 12 points. Former Hokie John Camden, who started, finished with just 2 in his return to Cassell, and those came at the foul line. He missed all his shot attempts from the field.

Notre Dame played well without Markus Burton but didn’t have enough to get the win. It was competitive at the half, but Clemson held Notre Dame to 27 second-half points.

Jestin Porter had a huge game for the Tigers with 26. RJ Godfrey had 16.

Jalan Haralson continues to have an impressive first season for the Irish. He had 18 here. Logan Imes, who doesn’t always score a lot, had 13 here.

No games until Tuesday when the highlight is Virginia’s visit to Louisville.
