Airport wrestlers soar to title in Top Gun Tournament by winning both Most Valuable awards; May leads Bedford girls basketball to victory.

WARREN – It was fitting that the Jets were crowned as Top Gun.

Airport wrestling team went 4-0 and won the Most Valuable Wrestler awards for both the upper and lower weights in winning the Warren DeLaSalle Top Gun Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 10.

“It was definitely our best weekend all season,” Airport coach Jon Morris said. “We had a lot of kids go 4-0 and 3-1. It was a good team tournament. I was happy with our performance and the fight the kids showed.”

The Jets soared over Woodhaven 53-23, Dearborn Heights Annapolis 71-9, Anchor Bay 66-18, and Warren De La Salle 46-32.

Kyle Link (126) won most valuable honors for the lower weights and Holden Otter (215) won the same title for the upper weights.

Link became the second Airport wrestler this season to reach 100 career wins, joining Kenny Wingate.

Otter is on the verge of joining the club. He finished the day with 99 wins in his career.

Also winning all four of their matches were Antonio Ayala (132) and Harrison Sampson (190). Going 3-1 were Manny Rodgers (106), Jayden Smith (113), Egan Kruise (144), Emmett Kruise (150), Roman Day (157) and Dylan Lay (285).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

May gives Bedford a lift

TEMPERANCE – Sienna May scored a season-high 14 points to lead Bedford to a 47-33 victory over Toledo Rogers Saturday.

Anna Gray led the way with 21 points as Bedford improved to 4-3.

Airport drops first game

CARLETON – Airport suffered its first loss after six wins to open the season, falling 60-51 to Whitmer Saturday.

Sophia Mator led Airport with 17 points.
