At long last, veteran outfielder Jo Adell is proving why the Los Angeles Angels selected him 10th in the 2017 MLB Draft.
It’s too bad, then, that Angels fans may not get to enjoy Adell for much longer.
It remains unclear whether or not the 49-52 Angels will choose to buy ahead of the July 31 deadline. The Angels only sit four games back in the AL Wild Card race — it’s difficult but not impossible to overcome those odds with two months left — and have a chance to earn their first non-losing season since 2015.
That might not stop the Angels from trading various players over the next week, and MLB insider Ken Rosenthal suggested the Angels could “sell high” on Adell. The sixth-year center fielder is batting .240 with 21 homers, 58 RBIs, and a .792 OPS. Adell has already tied a career-high with 0.9 bWAR months before becoming arbitration eligible.
“The odds of Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno authorizing an all-out sale are exceedingly slim,” Rosenthal wrote on Wednesday, “but imagine if it happened.”
If the Angels want to be sellers, then it makes far more sense to deal veterans or those on one-year deals. That group includes left-handed starter Tyler Anderson, closer Kenley Jansen, and third baseman Yoán Moncada, none of whom likely have a future in Anaheim.
Now isn’t the time to trade Adell unless teams are willing to give up significant assets in return. If not, the Angels are better off keeping Adell through the end of the season and evaluating his long-term fit come the offseason.
Trust us: if teams are open to adding Adell now, then they’ll certainly come calling in November or December.
