Manchester United’s first game of the post-Ruben Amorim era ended in a disappointing 2-2 draw against relegation candidates Burnley.

Despite only securing a point, there was plenty to admire about the team’s performance under interim boss Darren Fletcher.

He had players who were previously criticised by the ex-head coach playing with more freedom, as seen from Patrick Dorgu’s display.

Benjamin Sesko also returned to scoring ways, while the former midfielder’s positive substitutions pleased fans with academy wonderkid Shea Lacey producing almost a matchwinning cameo.

Darren Fletcher could remain in charge

The former Scotland international will remain at helm for Sunday’s FA Cup tie against Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford as INEOS continue their search for a caretaker manager in the background.

Former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his former assistant Michael Carrick are among the frontrunners, but the duo might not work in tandem this time around.

The co-owners are expected to meet the Norwegian on Saturday, but as per the reliable David Ornstein, there is no guarantee the situation gets resolved before next week’s Manchester derby.

“Darren Fletcher will take Manchester United for at least one more match [vs Brighton], he could even still in position for the next Premier League game, the Manchester derby,” he told NBC Sports.

Impressed the hierarchy

In fact, The Daily Mail have claimed that the U18s boss could even stay as the interim head until the end of the season.

“Solskjaer is battling with Michael Carrick for the role after United sacked Ruben Amorim this week, although caretaker boss Darren Fletcher cannot be ruled out.”

The reasons are stated by The BBC. The claim the hierarchy are impressed with how Darren Fletcher has worked his magic in such a short span of time.

He seems capable of handling the pressure, while players have also responded positively to him taking over from the ex-Sporting CP boss.

“Senior figures at Old Trafford are known to be impressed at the way Fletcher has gone about his work this week and how he has handled the external pressures of the role.”

It will be interesting to see in which direction INEOS go after this week’s game. A win on Sunday could propel Darren Fletcher to the top of the list.
