Boardman completes comeback over East in 4th quarter surge

Boardman boys basketball completed the comeback against Youngstown East 57-55 at East high school on Friday night.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Boardman boys basketball completed the comeback against Youngstown East, 57-55, at East High School on Friday night.

Boardman scored 23 fourth-quarter points to East’s 14 in the comeback victory. Gabe Hammerton scored the go-ahead layup to win the game with 10 seconds in regulation.

“We’ve been battling here for the last month, really trying to find our game. We’ve been close,” said Boardman head coach Steve Flores. “We’ve played some very good teams, tough. It’s just really nice to get over the hump.”

Spartan’s Jayse Varley scored a game-high 18 points in the win. Also, Ryan Smith recorded 16 points and Jerry Smith 12 in the win.

“We’ve been needing this. We were desperate, so it feels good we worked as a team,” said Ryan Smith.

East’s Alberto Maldonado scored a team-high 16 points, and Tyris Davisscored 14 in the loss.

Boardman advanced to 3-8 and broke a four-game losing streak. East falls to (7-5) with the loss.

Boardman plays Fitch next on Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. Next, East plays against Poland on Jan. 13 at 7 p.m.
