Dallas Mavericks’ Anthony Davis out indefinitely with hand injury, trade hopes dim

Dallas Mavericks star forward Anthony Davis has ligament damage in his left hand and will seek multiple opinions.

Davis injured his hand in the fourth quarter on Thursday night against the Utah Jazz and received Imaging on Friday morning to determine the severity of the injury.

He’s already been ruled out for Saturday’s game in Chicago, an annual homecoming for the native of the city. If Davis and the team choose a nonsurgical treatment plan, he is expected to miss at least six weeks, according to ESPN.

The injury is the latest setback for Davis and a Mavericks team already navigating a difficult season. Dallas is also currently without guard Kyrie Irving and center Dereck Lively II.

The timing of the latest injury is particularly consequential. The Mavericks have been aggressively exploring the trade market for the 32-year-old Davis ahead of the Feb. 5 deadline, sources told DLLS Sports’ Marc Stein. However, the market is complicated by his history of durability issues and his reported desire to sign a lucrative contract extension this offseason. This hand injury could make trading Davis more complicated.
