Martin Chivers, who scored more than 100 times for Southampton, died aged 80 on Wednesday.
Former Saints forward Martin Chivers, who died aged 80 on Wednesday, has been remembered as "a real local lad" who "moved like a Rolls Royce".
Born in Regents Park in Southampton, Chivers scored 108 times for his boyhood club between 1962 and 1968, before being sold to Tottenham £125,000 - a British record at the time.
Duncan Holley, a Southampton FC historian, called him a "powerful player" and said it was "good to see a local boy do so well".
He made 189 appearances for Southampton FC and the club said it was "deeply saddened to hear of his passing".
Holley said Chivers was born to a German mother and a father who worked at the docks.
He described him as "a true Sotonian" who left school aged 17 and immediately established himself as a first team player for Saints, in what was then the second division of English football.
The striker excelled when he moved to North London scoring 174 goals in 367 outings for Spurs, helping the club win the League Cup twice, as well as the Uefa Cup.
Holley admitted that he was "not the most confident of players" but went on to win 24 caps for England.

Former Southampton manager Dave Merrington told BBC Radio Solent that his thoughts were with Chivers' family.
Merrington played at the same time as Chivers and remembers how he was often battling for his place in teams with "great strikers" but described him as "a very good player" and "a really nice guy".
"He was powerful, he was skilful and he was a great finisher, people used to say he was lethargic and lazy but he moved like a Rolls Royce," Merrington said.
