Scherzer gave up a three-run homer to Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the first inning before allowing a solo shot by outfielder Cody Bellinger in the fifth. First baseman Ben Rice hit a solo homer of his own off of Toronto closer Jeff Hoffman in the ninth, giving New York a 5-4 lead that it didn't relinquish.
Scherzer gave his honest thoughts about the Yankees postgame, via Hazel Mae.
The future Hall of Famer said he got punished for not locating his pitches well.
“I tip my hat to the Yankees. They're a great lineup," he said. "They're tough as nails. This isn't taking anything away from them. This shows you how good they are. You make mistakes like that, they punish you.”
Scherzer said if you don't locate you pay the price in the major leagues.

Scherzer now has a 5.14 ERA across six starts this season. The former World Series champion went down with a thumb injury during his first outing of the year on March 29 and didn't return until June 25.
The Blue Jays are still three games ahead of the Yankees atop the AL East ahead of Wednesday's rubber match. New York southpaw Max Fried (11-3, 2.43 ERA) will face Toronto right-hander Chris Bassitt (10-4, 3.89 ERA).
