Cubs trade Owen Caissie and two lower level prospects to the Marlins for Edward Cabrera

The deal’s done.

We’ve been discussing the Cubs’ reported acquisition of Edward Cabrera all day, and now the deal is done, as he must have passed the team’s medical examination.

Here’s the return for Cabrera:

Owen Caissie was the last guy still in the Cubs organization from the trade of Yu Darvish to the Padres, which happened just a bit more than five years ago. So, in a way, Darvish eventually produced Cabrera, if you follow the trade chain.

Caissie made his MLB debut last August in Toronto, significant because Caissie is Canadian. He played in just 12 games for the Cubs, batting .192/.222/.346 (5-for-26) with one home run. He might have played more down the stretch, but suffered a concussion when he got tangled up with Pete Crow-Armstrong going for a fly ball Sept. 13 against the Rays [VIDEO].

No question, Caissie has talent and should get a chance to play full-time in Miami. He might not have gotten that with the Cubs. I wish him well.

Cristian Hernandez was the top Cubs international signing in January 2021, to much ballyhoo. He turned 22 in December and has yet to play above A ball. Last year in South Bend he batted .252/.329/.365 with seven home runs and 52 stolen bases. He’ll likely get more playing time in the Miami organization than the Cubs had for him.

Lastly, Edgardo De Leon is 19 and played for the Cubs affiliate in the Arizona Complex League in 2025, which is the new name for MLB’s rookie league. He batted .276/.353/.500 in 43 games, with five doubles, five triples, five home runs and five stolen bases.

Personally, I think the Cubs did well here. Caissie was obviously the main focus of this deal and even if he does well in Miami, the Cubs have a solid starting pitcher in return. The other two prospects are pretty far away from the big leagues, in my view.

It should be noted that the Cubs have not officially announced this deal, but I’d consider it completed.

Good work, Jed Hoyer. Now go sign Alex Bregman or Bo Bichette.
