Tuesday Big Ten Recap: Minnesota Upsets Iowa

Recap all the Big Ten action from Tuesday.

The Big Ten had three games on Tuesday and all three ended up being great games. The most notable included two ranked teams on the road in tight contests.

Let’s take a look at what happened.

Game of the Night:

Minnesota Golden Gophers 70, No. 19 Iowa Hawkeyes 67

For the game in a row, Minnesota faced off against what projected as a “superior” opponent and found a way to get the job done. The Gophers knocked off Northwestern on the road on Saturday and followed it up on Tuesday with a massive upset over Iowa. The game was competitive from the start and swung wildly between sides in the closing minutes. However, Minnesota’s defense held what’s been a productive Iowa offense to just 0.98 points per possession. Langston Reynolds also came up big, with 22 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

Minnesota improved to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in Big Ten play with the win. It’s the team’s fifth straight win and its sixth win over the last seven games. Outside of a loss on the road to a top five Purdue team, Minnesota has been perfect since Black Friday, which is quite a statement after a slow 4-4 start. The Gophers are now suddenly back in the postseason picture, with some massive home games forthcoming.

On the other side, Iowa fell to 12-3 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten play with the loss. It’s the group’s first slip up since December 11th, when it lost on the road to Iowa State and will leave quite a mark on the team’s resume, considering it had previously avoided any losses to opponents outside the top 12 on KenPom. Unfortunately, that’s no longer the case and it will leave the group with ground to make up as the calendar rolls on.

The Gophers will now prepare for USC at home on Friday. Iowa will try and get back on track against Illinois at home on Sunday.

The Rest:

No. 2 Michigan Wolverines 74, Penn State Nittany Lions 72

This one looked like a mismatch heading into tip, but Penn State had other thoughts, as the Nittany Lions played Michigan down to the final possession, even without star guard Kayden Mingo. Ivan Juric had an excellent game, finishing with 20 points and four rebounds. However, it still wasn’t quite enough, as Michigan’s defense held on a few late possessions and got the Wolverines the win. It was Michigan’s first win by fewer than 15 points in well over a month.

Michigan improved to 14-0 overall and 4-0 in Big Ten play with the win, while Penn State fell to 9-6 overall and 0-4 in Big Ten play with the loss. The Wolverines will now prepare for an intriguing game against Wisconsin at home on Saturday. Penn State will try and carry over the momentum from this one on the road against Purdue on Saturday.

Wisconsin Badgers 80, UCLA Bruins 72

This was an important game on both sides, as Wisconsin looked for its first quality win of the season and UCLA hoped to bounce back from a tough loss at Iowa over the weekend. And things played out accordingly, with a tight game for most of the night. However, Wisconsin was able to keep UCLA away thanks to a fast start and Nolan Winter, who finished with 18 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Nick Boyd also had 20 points.

Wisconsin improved to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten play with the win, while UCLA fell to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten play with the loss. The Badgers will now prepare for Michigan on the road on Saturday. The Bruins will hope to snap their two-game skid at home against Maryland on Saturday.
