Tennessee got on the board first with a Brown dunk. Texas responded with a layup to tie the game at two a piece, but the Vols went on a quick 6-0 run to take a 8-2 lead. That run included four points from freshman Nate Ament, two of which came from the free throw line after the rookie struggled against Arkansas (5-of-11).

However, the Longhorns then went on a 6-0 run of their own, taking their first lead of the game, 12-11. A few free throws from Carey and a Gillespie layup put the Vols back in front halfway through the first half.

Tennessee then took over, scoring the next 10 points to take a 28-17 lead. Gillespie quickly reached double digits with back-to-back layups and a triple.

However, Gillespie was just getting started. He hit back-to-back threes to give him 22 points at the end of the half. The point-guard finished 8-10 from the field and 3-of-4 from downtown in the opening frame.

Tennessee then went cold and didn’t score for 2:53 before JP Estrella ended the drought with a dunk for his first points of the night. Back-to-back triples from Texas cut Tennessee’s lead to 10 points after leading by 22 earlier in the half.

However, the Vols responded with a Felix Okpara dunk on the feed from Gillespie. After 22 points in the first half, Gillespie was held scoreless for the first 10:23 of the second frame.
