The Bears had a sloppy practice on Thursday, but a few players still stood out in a big way.
Chicago Bears training camp is in full swing ahead of the 2025 regular season. Under new head coach Ben Johnson, the Bears are preparing a return to relevancy with important practices and meetings at Halas Hall.
The starters, such as quarterback Caleb Williams, wide receivers Rome Odunze and DJ Moore, and defensive linemen Grady Jarrett and Montez Sweat, will hone their skills as they adjust to a new system. Rookies such as tight end Colston Loveland, receiver Luther Burden III, tackle Ozzy Trapilo, and defensive tackle Shemar Turner will look to hit the ground running ahead of their first season. And depth players like offensive lineman Doug Kramer, defensive end Dominique Robinson, and safety Jonathan Owens will try and hang on to a roster spot with competition nipping at their heels.
Following every Bears' training camp practice, we at Bears Wire will highlight a select number of players who stood out during the day. Here are the players who made plays on Day 2:
1. RB Kyle Monangai
By all accounts, Day 2 wasn't a favorable one for the offense as a whole, but don't tell the running backs that. A couple of them made big plays, including rookie Kyle Monangai. The former Rutgers standout arguably had the play of the day when he ripped a long run down the field. According to Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times, Monangai made a nice juke on cornerback Terell Smith down near the end zone as well. As of now, Monangai is still RB3, but running backs rotate quite a bit. If he makes more plays like the one on Thursday, he will see extended time with the starters.
2. CB Nahshon Wright
Through two training camp practices, cornerback Nahshon Wright hasn't made any big plays, but that doesn't mean he's not turning heads. For the second straight day, Wright has been working with the starters at outside cornerback in Jaylon Johnson's absence. Wright spent three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys from 2021 through 2023 and has familiarity with defensive backs coach Al Harris. Veteran safety Kevin Byard has been impressed with what Wright brings to the table. "He's been balling," Byard said via Bear Report's Zack Pearson. "He had a lot of turnovers in the spring." Johnson will be out for at least a couple of weeks, giving Wright a leg up when it comes to earning a roster spot.
3. RB D'Andre Swift
D'Andre Swift is a man on a mission entering Year 2 with the Bears. After a disappointing 2024 season, Swift is out to show he can be the primary ball carrier and live up to the contract he signed last offseason. He's off to a solid start. Swift made a nice one-handed catch down the sideline in individual drills. The pass from quarterback Caleb Williams stuck to his right hand as he continued sprinting upfield. Johnson is encouraged by what he's seen from his starting running back and knows Swift is out to prove something. "He's not happy with how things went for him last year," Johnson said via CHGO Bears. "I see a very hungry individual." Swift was arguably at his best under Johnson in 2022 when he averaged 5.5 yards per carry. Maybe he can have similar success in 2025.
