The 19-year-old right back arrives from Hammarby IF, the club she joined at the age of seven and represented at senior level from 2022.

Holmberg made her first team debut at just 15 and leaves Stockholm having made 96 senior appearances, scoring 10 goals and winning the Damallsvenskan title in 2023 as well as Svenska Cupen triumphs in 2023 and 2025.

“It’s always been my dream to play for Arsenal,” Holmberg said.

“This is a very special moment for me and my family, but it’s also about joining a club with the highest standards and a strong winning culture. I’m excited to start this new chapter, to continue developing my game in a demanding environment and to compete at the highest level.

“My ambitions align with the club’s and I want to help win silverware here.”

Head coach Renée Slegers highlighted Holmberg’s versatility and physical profile as key factors behind the move.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Smilla to the club,” Slegers said.

“She’s a very talented young defender who brings versatility and athleticism, with so much potential for development. I’m looking forward to working with her as we aim for more trophies together.”

Arsenal’s Director of Women’s Football Clare Wheatley added that the club had moved decisively to secure a player they see as a long term asset.

“We’re delighted to bring Smilla to Arsenal,” Wheatley said.

“She’s one of the most exciting young full backs in Europe and has shown real composure and maturity already in her professional career. Congratulations to Smilla and her family on this special achievement.”

Holmberg will wear the number 31 shirt, the same number she wore during her time at Hammarby. She is expected to operate primarily as understudy to Emily Fox at right back, while also offering tactical flexibility across the defensive line.
