Charlton Athletic have completed the signing of forward Mary McAteer on a free transfer.
The Addicks announced the news via a post on their official club website earlier today.
The 21-year-old joins Charlton Athletic after leaving the club’s Barclays WSL2 rivals Sunderland earlier this summer. McAteer spent two years on Wearside in which she netted seven goals in 38 games in all competitions. The forward was a member of the Sunderland side that challenged strongly for promotion alongside her new club Charlton Athletic in 2023/2024.
McAteer spent her youth in the academy system at Barclays Women’s Super League club Aston Villa. The youngster impressed in a dual-registration spell with former Barclays WSL2 club Coventry United before joining the Warwickshire side on a permanent basis. McAteer joined Sunderland off the back of Coventry United’s rebrand to Rugby Borough in summer 2023.
On the international stage, McAteer has featured for the Welsh national team. She has been capped by The Red Dragons on seven occasions while she scored one goal.
McAteer is Charlton Athletic’s fourth signing of the summer transfer window. She will be hoping to help deliver the goals needed for The Addicks to mount a fresh promotion push in Barclays WSL2 this season.
