BYU played a true road game for the first time in the regular season and largely controlled the game in a 83-73 win at Kansas State.

In a game that figured to feature a lot of possessions and points, it was BYU’s defense that carried the Cougs. Kansas State came into the game shooting 40% from three (9th nationally), and BYU held the Wildcats to 3-21 from distance. BYU’s stayed home on shooters and Keba Keita and Abdullah Ahmed provide rim protection on the back end with 5 combined blocks. Keba Keita owned the glass with 8 offensive and 8 defensive rebounds and BYU won the rebound battle 47-35.

AJ Dybantsa led BYU with 24 points, Rob Wright scored 18, Richie scored 13, Keba had 11 points, and Mihailo Boskovic gave a spark off the bench with 9 points and two made threes. BYU struggled with 19 turnovers, including 7 from Dybantsa, but stout defense and 38% shooting from three kept BYU a comfortable distance ahead of Kansas State for the entire second half.

This was already BYU’s fourth Quad one win of the season and first true road Q1 win as BYU continues to build its resume. BYU is well ahead of last season — last year BYU didn’t get its first Q1 win until Jan 28 and fourth on February 28. With the win BYU has a wide open path to start Big 12 play 4-0.

BYU next hosts Arizona State Wednesday night and plays at Utah next Saturday.
